Kilkenny are reigning All-Ireland champions, and as the 2012 Championship season approached, they issued an early warning to anypretenders by adding on the 2012 League title, recording a decisive victory over Cork in the inal in May.In Leinster, any threat was most likelyto come from Galway or Dublin, but the Dubs’ recent revival seemed to have gone into reverse in the League, ending in relegation. And that was the way it transpired as the challenge to Kilkenny was left to Galway. And, boy, did theyrise to it. The Leinster Final, Galway vKilkenny, will long be remembered in the folklore of hurling as Canning and Co. put on a display that was truly awesome. Fair to say the match turned the 2012 Hurling Championship on its head, and now it was Galway catching the headlines and laying down the marker. Munster hurling had one amazing backdrop in the 2012 Championship – the ive contenders each had a new manager at the helm. The iconic Jimmy Barry Murphy took over in Cork. In Tipperary Eamon O’Shea assumed
the mantle from Declan Ryan. Davy Fitzgerald returned to his native Clare, and was replaced in Waterford by one of their own, Michael Ryan. And Limerick’s new man was ex-Cork supremo John Allen. Would all these managerial changes result in some fresh Munster challenges in the quest for LIAM, or would Kilkenny and Galway hog that script?
And, oh yes, there was another continuing storyline in the 2012 annals – the legend that is Henry Sheflin!
